Painting
The finish everyone sees. Prep discipline and product selection separate a 2-year finish from an 8-year finish.
What this trade is
Painting covers surface prep (patching, sanding, priming), masking, application (roller, brush, spray), and — increasingly — cabinet refinishing. On remodels, painters also handle stain work on millwork and site-finished wood trim.
Why a GC needs a verified painting sub
Painters are often the last trade on site. A painting sub who has worked the GC's previous projects understands that GC's trim-profile preferences, the builder's standard caulking schedule, and the expected finish sheen for each room category. Ad hoc painters bring their own preferences and miss these.
Regulatory landscape
License structure varies by jurisdiction. AskBaily verifies against the licensing authority that applies to the project location — not the GC's headquarters. A few representative jurisdictions:
- California — CSLBC-33 (Painting and Decorating)
C-33 specialty license. EPA Lead RRP certification required for homes built before 1978 regardless of state.
CSLB→ - Federal — EPA RRPLead Renovation, Repair and Painting
Federal rule applies to any pre-1978 housing. Individual renovator + firm certification required for any lead-disturbing work.

Quality signals AskBaily tracks
Each declared sub accumulates these signals across projects. They appear on the sub's digital twin and on the GC's public sub-trade view.
- EPA Lead RRP certification
Required for pre-1978 homes. Non-negotiable for older housing stock.
- Cabinet-refinish portfolio
Cabinet refinishing is a different skill tier than wall painting — flagged separately.
Cross-trades
Paintingsits at the edge of several other trades. Coordinated scheduling between these is the GC's core responsibility; the sub-trade graph makes the coordination visible across projects.
